The “Child Abuse and Neglect in Hawaii” 2021 statistical report, there were 294 reported cases to Child Welfare Services. According to the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center (CJC) statement in April 2023 regarding child sexual abuse statistics: “the statistics may not reflect the full magnitude of the problem in Hawaiʻi, as child abuse and child sexual abuse often go unreported. Some studies conclude that only 10 percent of children ‘tell’.”

After moving to Hawaiʻi in early 2022, I fell in love with the people, the culture and the beauty of the islands. As a pediatrician, taking care of the health of children and talking about prevention is essential. I felt strongly that I wanted to make sure that the message of body safety reached the keiki (children) and their families. Learning about the history of Hawaiʻi, including the language – ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi – I knew that this book needed to be in Hawaiian.
“In 1978, Hawaiian was re-established as an official language of the state of Hawaiʻi.” There is a growing movement to “preserve, use and support” the language. “Hawaiian is the most widely studied Native American language and it is the only Native American language that is used officially by a state government.” (Source: olelo.hawaii.edu, About the Hawaiian language).
Special Mahalo to Chalice Kaneshiro, staff member at Kamehameha Schools, Maui, for her assistance with the translation of this book. Also, mahalo nui loa to Hiʻilani Shibata for help with the translation. Hiʻilani also shared her knowledge and exhibits the spirit of Aloha and love for her people and her culture.

"I ka makahiki 1978, ua hoʻokumu hou ʻia ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi ma ke ʻano he ʻōlelo kūhelu no ka mokuʻāina ʻo Hawaiʻi." Ke ulu nei ka neʻe e "mālama, hoʻohana a kākoʻo" i ka ʻōlelo. "ʻO ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi ka ʻōlelo ʻōiwi ʻAmelika i aʻo nui ʻia a ʻo ia wale nō ka ʻōlelo ʻōiwi ʻAmelika i hoʻohana ʻia e ke aupuni mokuʻāina." (Source: olelo.hawaii.edu, About the Hawaiian language).
